Dr. Harry Clay Sharp, a prison physician in Jeffersonville, Indiana, was influential in the movement to enact eugenics legislation in Indiana and nationally. He advocated vasectomies as a way to prevent the transmission of "degenerate" traits. Indiana's 1907 eugenics law was the first eugenic sterilization legislation in the United States. This image was published in "The Progress of Eugenical Sterilization," by Paul Popenoe, Journal of Heredity (vol. 25:1) in 1934.
